The Black Eel is a long narrative poem written in 1954 by Ai Qing, China's foremost living poet. It tells the story of a young fisherman sailing on a stormy sea. After his boat is wrecked, he finds refuge on an island where he meets a loving girl and a despot. His marriage to the girl offends the despot. a struggle ensues. Finally the lovers take to the sea in search of a way out.
